Machinery Rooms of the Mediterranean (MEDMACH)

Images and Visual Archives of Movement and Acceleration, 1800-present

The aim of MEDMACH is to consider, analyze and discuss entangled histories of the Mediterranean after 1800 through images of movement: infrastructures and machineries of acceleration such as airports, train stations, motorway bridges, industrial ports, and engine-driven ships. MEDMACH will work with a visual approach to establish a new, systemic historical understanding which is urgently needed in current debates on travel, transit, migration, environment, and cultural encounter. This blog will inform about the research group members, the academic activities and output of MEDMACH. Moreover, the blog will be used for outreach: The team will regularly post contributions reflecting the progress of the project, (self-)critically communicating scholarly practice, especially concerning those parts of the project which are themselves part of Mediterranen mobility (site visits, conference travel in the region etc.). The blog will also specifically be used to address those aspects of the project which can't be represented easily in standardized academic publication formats: observations during field trips, issues of current political relevance.
