The Color Line

Race Relations in Schlüsseltexten amerikanischer Autor:innen (1881-1953)

“The world problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line" W.E.B. Du Bois famously wrote in his book The Souls of Black Folks in 1903. This sentence can be regarded as a pivot for the ways in which Race was addressed and talked about, since even though DuBois was looking ahead into the 20th century, he built on the thoughts, works, and actions of many women and men before him.Students of the University of Basel, Switzerland, engage with key writings by Sojourner Truth (ca. 1797-1883), Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), W.E.B DuBois (1868-1963) and James Baldwin (1924-1987. They use them as sources for the time when they were written, for the history of Race as a notion in public discourse, for the history of African American resistance and as a resource for debates we are still leading today.
