Scientific Review

Presentation

The OpenEdition Journals platform hosts several hundred online journals specialized in the humanities and social sciences. 80% of all content is immediately and permanently available for authors and readers to read, cite and share. Each year, on average, thirty-five journals apply to join the platform (this concerns applications received since 2016, source: OpenEdition annual report 2020, p.14).

The OpenEdition Scientific Board in charge of evaluating journal applications, is supported by external reviewers to help it choose which journals to accept, postpone or reject according to the OpenEdition Journals admissibility criteria

University professor, scholars, lecturer, etc. they are all issued from the academic world. The journal application review carried out each year brings scientific added value to the platform and largely supports the development of open access to publications in the human and social sciences.

Reviewers are chosen by the OpenEdition Membership Team for their disciplinary skills and in connection with the journal's disciplines. To guarantee their independence, the assessment is carried out in a single blind review. For each journal, two experts are called upon to assess the application.

To carry out the assessment, the reviewers have access to the application file as well as to the latest issues published. After consulting the file, they are invited to complete an evaluation report, which breaks down as follows:

  •  the first part aims to determine the scientific scope of the journal;
  • the expert are then asked to assess the scientific quality and homogeneity of the issues;
  • finally, the editorial aspects are examined, including the process of selecting articles and the layout work.

Reviewers are also asked to argue briefly about the journal's entire project, giving their opinion concerning the accession of the journal to the OpenEdition Journals platform, they can choose between a favorable / favorable with reservations / unfavorable opinion.

Once completed, the report is presented to our internal editorial committee that evaluate the editorial aspects, the technical complexity of the project as well as the organization and sustainability of the project in the long term. Finally, the Scientific Board discuss and judges the journals projects during the annual rankings (4 rankings per year).

It is called upon to vote and then to decide on:

  • the scientific interest and scope of the journal;
  • the priority of the journal in relation to the OpenEdition criteria.

Once the journal classification meeting has passed, anonymized reports can be sent to journals which request them, so that they can take note of suggestions for improvements to their editorial project.

The OpenEdition team and Scientific Board wish to thank and recognize the experts who helped review the applications received. A list of reviewers will be published every year.
