The Dantean Anomaly Project
Climate Change and Society in the Late Middle Ages
The blog is the main platform to present the approach and preliminary results of the Junior Research Group on the “Dantean Anomaly” (1309-1321), financed by the Volkswagen Foundation via a Freigeist Fellowship. The JRG is based at the Leibniz-Institute für the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), Leipzig, Germany. The main goal of the research group is to provide a comparative perspective on rapid climate change and its societal impact for Northern Italy, Eastern France and Central Europe during a decade of extreme meteorological events, famine and disease which is often regarded as the tipping point of the Little Ice Age. Furthermore, the project is meant to investigate the global dimension of this period of rapid climate change and the processes of adaption to be found in different cultures from Europe, the Middle East and East Asia.
