Images and other representations of architecture are one of our most important sources to grasp the meaning of architecture. In the early modern period architectural drawings became an outstanding part of the theoretical discussion about architecture and art itself. Sketches, models, and diagrams help us to understand contemporary positions of design, function, style and representation. Therefore this blog is mainly interested in the epistemic history of architectural drawings. I will focus on encouraging the ongoing discussion by presenting widely unknown objects and bringing said aspects to attention.

Zeichnungen, Bilder und Modelle sind unsere wichtigsten Quellen zur Erforschung der Bedeutung und Bedeutungsstiftung von Architektur. In der Frühen Neuzeit bilden Zeichnungen einen zentralen Ausgangspunkt in der theoretischen Diskussion von Architektur, Kunst und Kunsttheorie. Skizzen, visuelle Modelle und Diagramme geben uns dabei nicht nur einen Einblick in zeitgenössische Entwurfsprozesse, sondern auch in Visualisierungsstrategien komplexer Systeme. Was also kann eine ‚epistemic history of architectural drawings‘ grundsätzlich leisten, welche Impulse mag sie uns geben?
