Tourism and National Identity
The Case of Austria
This blog is part of my book-length project about the role of tourism in the reconstruction of Austrian national identity after 1945. I am specifically interested in exploring, how tourism facilitated the reconstruction of the Austrian nation and its place in a context where more conventional theories of nation formation, i.e. Anderson's "imagined community" or Hobsbawm's "invented traditions", do not readily apply. As I continue working on the manuscript, I will discuss case studies and theoretical approaches on this blog and invite your comments and feedback.
